A former Lancashire high school teacher who has twice survived breast cancer, has used her experiences and difficulties in sourcing specialist bras to act as a catalyst for a new business.
Forward thinking and determined Shirley Rigby, who first beat the disease in 1999, before battling the disease for a second time in 2005, has set up Boobilicious. The lingerie shop in Upholland will also provide a measuring service and bras for women who find themselves in similar circumstances.
Shirley explained “Boobilicious is a lingerie shop, but I am also going to be offering a measuring service and selling masterectomy bras. It is just so difficult for women who have had a masterectomy to get bras that fit. You can’t just go to Debenhams for them”.
She continued “Because I have had a double masterectomy, I need to have pockets in mine to hold the prosthesis. It is hard trying to find somewhere to get them, so I thought to myself if I set up in business I could maybe help others who have the same problem.”
Shirley was recently made redundant from her job as a cover supervisor at Upholland High School where she worked for 14 years. She decided to invest her redundancy money into the new venture.
She has also written a book, titled ‘Boobs Are Not Everything’ which talks about her experiences battling the disease.
About writing the book, Shirley said “For me it was just therapy. It helped me get through what I have been through twice. I want the message of the book to be that cancer does not need be the end of the world. You can survive it, twice even. It is survivable”.
Boobilicious opened on August 19th and is located at The Old Post Office, Hall Green, Upholland, Lancashire.
